Billy Joel Reacts To Fall Out Boy’s Updated Version Of ‘We Didn’t Start The Fire’

Billy Joel Reacts To Fall Out Boy’s Updated Version Of ‘We Didn’t Start The Fire’

Legendary singer Billy Joel has given his thumbs up to Fall Out Boy‘s updated version of “We Didn’t Star The Fire.”

In a recent interview with BBC Radio2, Joel revealed that he has heard the new verses.

“Everybody’s been wanting to know when there’s going to be an updated version of it, because my song started in ’49 and ended in ’89 – it was a 40 year span,” Joel said. “Everybody said, ‘Well, aren’t you going to do a part two?’ I said, ‘Nah, I’ve already done part one.’ So, Fall Out Boy, go ahead. Great, take it away.”

Fall Out Boy recently released an updated version of Joel’s classic hit “We Didn’t Start the Fire.”

Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire” recounts the most important events of his life up until its release, covering the time period of 1949 to 1989.

Fall Out Boy’s rendition picks up where Joel left off, changing the lyrics to include news that made headlines from 1989 to 2023, including 9-11, school massacres, politics, climate change, the death of celebrities like Kurt Cobain and Michael Jackson, and conspiracy theories, including Qanon.

Fall Out Boy also mention cultural touchstones like Pokémon, Spongebob, and Harry Potter in addition to phenomenal athletes such as Michael Jordan, Lebron James, and the Williams sisters, as well as the 2016 World Series win of their hometown Chicago Cubs.

“I thought about this song a lot when I was younger. All these important people and events – some that disappeared into the sands of time -others that changed the world forever,” Fall Out Boy explained on Twitter at the time of the release.
